Später soll er zu Connery einmal gesagt haben, dass die Million jedoch am Ende billiger gekommen wäre als das nachher um den Film entstandene Chaos, das nicht zuletzt durch die Vielzahl anderer Stars zustande kam.

When the property wound up at Columbia Pictures, they decided to create the satire to end all satires with a host of writers, five famous directors, and an all-star cast led by Peter Sellers.

Unfortunately, Sellers' ego reached critical mass during the production and he was fired mid-way into filming--and suddenly roles that were originally envisioned as cameos had to be expanded to finish the project.

The result is one of the most bizarre films imaginable. The story, such as it is, finds James Bond David Niven called out of retirement to deal with the sudden disappearance of secret agents all over the world.

In order to confuse the unknown enemy, Sir James orders ALL secret agents to use the name James Bond--and before you can blink there are Bonds aplenty running wild all over the globe.

Eventually all the Bonds, including through the magic of editing Peter Sellers, wind up at Casino Royale, where they confront the evil agents of SMERSH and a diabolical mad man with a plot to rule the world.

The plot is absolute chaos, but that doesn't prevent the film from being a lot of fun to watch. The entire cast runs wild with some marvelous over-the-top performances, and whenever the writers can jam in a gag or a weird plot turn they do precisely that: And that's just for starters.

At one point Niven blows up the locked door of a psychedelically decorated dudgeon with lysergic acid--better know as LSD--and in a way this is indicative of the entire film, which was made at the height of the s ultra-mod movement: It is visually arresting, to say the least.

And then there is that famous Burt Bacharach score, easily one of the best of the decade, sporting Herp Albert on the main theme and Dusty Springfield's legendary performance of "The Look of Love.

I've found that viewers tend to have extremely different reactions to this film--they either love it or hate it, so you may want to rent this one first.

But it's one of my favorite guilty pleasures, and I recommend it for fans of the unexpectedly odd. Enjoy a night in with these popular movies available to stream now with Prime Video.

Sean Connery, Jill St. The Pink Panther Live and Let Die The Man with the Golden Gun From Russia with Love Edit Cast Cast overview, first billed only: Image quality varies from scene to scene, but it's a reflection of the source material I'm sure.

I will say that Ursula Andress looks as good as ever. Though the detail has been improved over the previous inferior DVD format release, there's still a bit of edge enhancement that I noticed.

Still, it's what I believe to be a step up from the previous DVD and if this kind of movie floats your boat - should find a nice home next to the "real" Bond movies in your collection.

Blu-ray Audio Quality — The disc has a 5. The Audio has been cleaned up a bit and though this title in no way competes with the newer soundtracks, does have a moment or two of greatness.

Take "greatness" with a grain of salt, if you please. Dialogue sounds nice and natural with little to no distortion. It's about as close to a mono track as you can get without actually being mono.

Still, it's not a horrible or unlistenable mix and for that and I'm very pleased. Blu-ray Special Features and Extras: Cork has also co-produced many of the documentaries included on the "ultimate" Bond DVDs.

The commentary often takes on a "six degrees of James Bond" quality, as the speakers riff on the subsequent careers and chance connections of people involved in the film.

The Making of Casino Royale [] [ The documentary is divided into five parts: Theatrical Trailer [] [2: Similar to its finale - this remains a jumbled mass of bubbles and fun.

If you can allow the fun to sweep over you rather than scrutinize it - you will definitely be better-off for your viewing experience.

The Blu-ray, in my opinion, represents the best it's going to get for this psychedelic James Bond film. Miller — Your Ultimate No.

True, it's nothing like the movies produced as part of the "official" James Bond series, which is why I suspect it has earned such derision from film critics and, from what I can see, other users of Amazon too.

Nevertheless I have always rather enjoyed this sprawling comedy purely on its own terms rather than comparing it with the contemporaneous epics of Sean Connery and I think, for the uninitiated, that is really the best way to appreciate it.

As a result, a flabby script became a chaotic, psychedelic ode to the swinging '60s, where any aspirations to remain faithful to Ian Fleming's original novel simply fell by the wayside in an effort to get something - ANYTHING!

The bizarre auction segment makes me chuckle, where we see representatives of the American, Chinese and British armies confusingly explaining how they will indicate to the auctioneer Vladek Sheybal that they are making a bid for articles from villain Le Chiffre's collection of blackmail material the Chinese - led by Burt Kwouk - announce that they will stand up; the Americans say that they will sit down; while the British - decisive as ever - casually choose to do a bit of both.

There is also the scene designed to spoof the famous sequences involving Q in the official Bonds, where Sellers' tries out various gadgets and special clothing which allows the actor to indulge in some punning repartee and innuendo with Geoffrey Bayldon and co.

Meanwhile, the parade of guest stars is entertaining in itself, with the likes of George Raft and even racing driver Stirling Moss making cameos, and Dusty Springfield cooing 'The Look Of Love' over the soundtrack enabled the song to become one of the standards of the s.

However, I don't consider it a Bond movie; rather, it is a notoriously wacky s time capsule of innocent fun with - thanks to this Region One edition - a fascinating background story to go with it.

I have all the Bond movies and didn't feel that my collection would be complete without this one, even though it is gently making fun of the rest.

Much derided but well worth seeking out. After saying that it sums up s kitsch, and early Bond campiness. Countless others appear in this impossible to summarise movie.

Worth seeking out for the Bond completist. I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it at the cinema, aged The colour, the pop art production design, the many very funny sequences, the fantastic Burt Bacharach score.

Everyone says it's a mess yawn but so what - it's a glorious and unique sixties time capsule. The print is terrific, given its age.

And the accompanying documentary - featuring anecdotes from the likes of directors Val Guest and Joe McGrath and others - prove that the real villain of the piece appears to have been producer Charles K.

Feldman, who indulged Peter Sellers and almost removed all the jokes. Chris Nolan should be forced to watch this and learn that comedy is entertainment too.

Despite its poor reviews in the UK the film continued to play to great success in London in the weeks before the opening of You Only Live Twice at the same cinema.

Pre-production problems resulted in Casino Royale finally going before the cameras in February - almost a year after shooting was actually announced in trade magazines.

The final script is credited to Wolf Mankowitz who wrote an early version of the script for Dr. When shooting finally began at Shepperton Studios there were rumours of a rift between co-stars Peter Sellers and Orson Welles that perpetuates to this day.

Production stills prove that the two actors did appear on set together, and much of what they shot does appear in the finished film.

The disjointed production schedule was rearranged daily to suit the availability of many high-profile guest stars who were brought in at the last minute by producer Charles K.

The teaser trailer highlighted the appearance of two star players whose performances are little more than a cameo, as they only have a few seconds of actual screen time in the finished film.

Filming began in February with director Joseph McGrath, who was eventually dismissed from the production on the instructions of Peter Sellers who ironically would be dismissed from the production himself in May Robert Parrish then took over from the end of February until late April with his work on the film being confined to Shepperton Studios.

John Huston also played 'M' after the original choice Robert Morley was unavailable. Back at Shepperton Studios American director and stuntman Richard Talmadge shot the action sequences on the casino set from May to July Director Joseph McGrath , a personal friend of Sellers, was punched by the actor when he complained about Sellers' behavior on the set.

Some biographies of Sellers suggest that he took the role of Bond to heart, and was annoyed at the decision to make Casino Royale a comedy, as he wanted to play Bond straight.

This is illustrated in somewhat fictionalised form in the film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers , based on the biography by Roger Lewis , who has claimed that Sellers kept re-writing and improvising scenes to make them play seriously.

This story is in agreement with the observation that the only parts of the film close to the book are the ones featuring Sellers and Welles.

Jean-Paul Belmondo and George Raft received major billing , even though both actors appear only briefly.

Both appear during the climactic brawl at the end, Raft flipping his trademark coin and promptly shooting himself dead with a backward-firing pistol, while Belmondo appears wearing a fake moustache as the French Foreign Legion officer who requires an English phrase book to translate " merde!

At the Intercon science fiction convention held in Slough in , David Prowse commented on his part in this film, apparently his big-screen debut. He claimed that he was originally asked to play "Super Pooh", a giant Winnie-the-Pooh in a superhero costume who attacks Tremble during the Torture of The Mind sequence.

This idea, as with many others in the film's script, was rapidly dropped, and Prowse was re-cast as a Frankenstein -type Monster for the closing scenes.

The final sequence was principally directed by former actor and stuntman Richard Talmadge. The story of Casino Royale is told in an episodic format.

Val Guest oversaw the assembly of the sections, although he turned down the credit of "co-ordinating director". Sellers left the production before all his scenes were shot, which is why his character, Tremble, is so abruptly captured in the film.

Whether Sellers was fired or simply walked off is unclear. Given that he often went absent for days at a time and was involved in conflicts with Welles, either explanation is plausible.

The framing device of a beginning and ending with David Niven was invented to salvage the footage. He chose to use the original Bond and Vesper as linking characters to tie the story together.

In the originally released versions of the film, a cardboard cutout of Sellers in the background was used for the final scenes. In later versions, this cardboard cutout was replaced by footage of Sellers in highland dress, inserted by "trick photography".

Signs of missing footage from the Sellers segments are evident at various points. Evelyn Tremble is not captured on camera; an outtake of Sellers entering a racing car was substituted.

Out-takes of Sellers were also used for Tremble's dream sequence pretending to play the piano on Ursula Andress ' torso , in the finale - blowing out the candles whilst in highland dress - and at the end of the film when all the various "James Bond doubles" are together.

In the kidnap sequence, Tremble's death is also very abruptly inserted; it consists of pre-existing footage of Tremble being rescued by Vesper, followed by a later-filmed shot of her abruptly deciding to shoot him, followed by a freeze-frame over some of the previous footage of her surrounded by bodies noticeably a zoom-in on the previous shot.

As well as this, an entire sequence involving Tremble going to the front for the underground James Bond training school which turns out to be under Harrods , of which the training area was the lowest level was never shot, thus creating an abrupt cut from Vesper announcing that Tremble will be James Bond to Tremble exiting the lift into the training school.

So many sequences from the film were removed, that several well-known actors never appeared in the final cut, including Ian Hendry as , the agent whose body is briefly seen being disposed of by Vesper , Mona Washbourne and Arthur Mullard.

For the music, Feldman decided to bring Burt Bacharach , who had done the score for his previous production What's New Pussycat?

Bacharach worked over two years writing for Casino Royale , in the meantime composing the After the Fox score and being forced to decline participation in Luv.

Lyricist Hal David contributed with various songs, many of which appeared in just instrumental versions. The title theme was Alpert's second number one on the Easy Listening chart where it spent two weeks at the top in June and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot It is played in the scene of Vesper Lynd recruiting Evelyn Tremble, seen through a man-size aquarium in a seductive walk.

It was heard again in the first Austin Powers film, which was to a degree inspired by Casino Royale. Bacharach would later rework two tracks of the score into songs: A clarinet melody would later be featured in a Cracker Jack commercial.

As an in-joke, a brief snippet of John Barry 's song " Born Free " is used in the film. The original album cover art was done by Robert McGinnis , based on the film poster and the original stereo vinyl release of the soundtrack Colgems COSO That record has been regarded by some music critics as the finest-sounding LP of all time, and is still highly sought after by audiophiles.

The soundtrack album became famous among audio purists for the excellence of its recording. It then became a standard "audiophile test" record for decades to come, especially the vocal performance by Dusty Springfield on "The Look of Love.

The film soundtrack has since been released by other companies in different configurations including complete score releases.

The highly regarded master tapes were damaged, however, during a s remastering so none of the subsequent re-releases are considered to be as fine as the original LP release.

However, during filming the project ran into several problems and the shoot ran months over schedule, with the costs also running well over.

When the film was finally completed it had doubled its original budget. The problems postponed the launch until April Casino Royale had its world premiere in London's Odeon Leicester Square on 13 April , breaking many opening records in the theatre's history.

No advance press screenings of Casino Royale were held, leading reviews to only appear after the premiere. Writing in , Danny Peary noted, "It's hard to believe that in we actually waited in anticipation for this so-called James Bond spoof.

It was a disappointment then; it's a curio today, but just as hard to get through. In fact, I recommend you see it on television when it's in a two-hour including commercials slot.

Then you won't expect it to make any sense. A few recent reviewers have been more impressed by the film. Andrea LeVasseur, in the AllMovie review, called it "the original ultimate spy spoof", and opined that the "nearly impossible to follow" plot made it "a satire to the highest degree".

Further describing it as a "hideous, zany disaster" LeVasseur concluded that it was "a psychedelic, absurd masterpiece".

It is the anti-auteur work of all time, a film shaped by the very zeitgeist it took on. In his review of the film, Leonard Maltin remarked, "Money, money everywhere, but [the] film is terribly uneven — sometimes funny, often not.

The website's critical consensus states: Fox has since been responsible for the debut of the Casino Royale on Blu-ray disc in Danjaq LLC , Eon's holding company, is shown as one of its present copyright owners.
